I’m just finishing Roger Pickenpaugh’s fine book, Johnson’s Island, subtitled, A Prison for Confederate Officers, (c) 2016 by The Kent State University Press, Kent, Ohio, 44242. The book is well researched from public records plus prisoner diaries, letters, and a few interview accounts. It is well written and organized, with sections on location, operation, prisoner exchanges, prisoner activities and economics, Union guards and commanders, escapes, food, climate and health, and finally the Road to Release. I live in Akron, Ohio, and will certainly try to visit the site. Thank you for the fine photograph.
